As someone who loves caravanning and likes a minimalist lifestyle, finding clever storage solutions to keep things tidy is a skill. Over the years, I’ve discovered some tips and tricks that work for me, I would like to share them with you.
Here are my favourite caravan storage ideas, with examples of what I use and why they’ve been game-changers.
Creating an organized space in a caravan can make a significant difference in your travel experience, allowing you to enjoy the journey without the stress of disorganization.
Magnetic Strips
I’ve tried magnetic strips for small metal items, and they’re fantastic in the kitchen area. These strips can be used to keep knives and scissors secure, which frees up valuable drawer space. It’s impressive how well these strips can hold various tools without taking up any counter space.
However, I’m careful about what I mount—I don’t like too much clutter on the walls, as I prefer a minimalistic approach to my kitchen design. Additionally, I don’t really like knives displayed, as I believe they can detract from the overall aesthetic of the room.
The versatility of magnetic solutions extends beyond just kitchen tools—they can also be used in the toolbox to use the space more efficiently.
Strategically placing these magnetic strips and hooks, I can maintain an organized and visually appealing kitchen without sacrificing functionality. Overall, incorporating magnetic storage solutions has greatly improved my kitchen’s efficiency while keeping it stylish and clutter-free.
Purchase Nesting Bowls and Measuring Spoons
Nesting kitchenware is a must-have for me, especially in today’s world where maximizing space is essential. I’ve invested in a variety of bowls and measuring spoons that stack neatly inside one another. This organization not only simplifies my kitchen but also makes it easier to find what I need without rummaging through a cluttered cabinet.
My favourite set includes bowls with lids that double as food storage—perfect for leftovers or prepping meals on the road. These bowls come in different sizes, which adds versatility to my cooking routine while keeping my kitchen neat and tidy.
In addition to traditional nesting bowls, I’ve also started using silicone collapsible bowls, which save even more space and are super lightweight. These collapsible bowls are incredibly versatile; they can be used for serving, mixing, or even as portable food containers. I love how easy they are to store—when I’m not using them, they fit snugly in a small drawer or even a handbag. Moreover, they come in vibrant colors that make meal prep fun and inviting.
Overall, investing in nesting kitchenware and collapsible options has transformed my cooking experience, allowing me to have a functional and organized kitchen without sacrificing style or efficiency. It’s all about creating a space that makes cooking enjoyable and accessible!
Don’t Overlook Ceiling Space
While I’m not a fan of cluttered walls, I’ve found ways to use ceiling space without making it feel cluttered. Installing small, netted storage compartments in the ceiling corners of my caravan, I can create extra space for items like hats and scarves.
Hats are difficult to store, especially western hats. I have found these hangers and nets are effective as they are out of the way but still easily accessible

Think About Unused Areas
One of the best things I’ve done is identify overlooked areas for storage. This has not only helped me declutter my living spaces but has also made it easier to organize and find items when I need them. For instance:
I’ve installed storage bags on the backs of cupboard doors for items like tea towels and cleaning cloths. This simple addition has maximized vertical storage space without taking up any floor area. By using the often-neglected back of the doors, I can easily access these essential household items while keeping them neat and out of sight. Additionally, I can label the bags to quickly identify their contents.
The space under the seating in my caravan is perfect for storing my soft storage bags filled with off-season clothes. This is a great use of space that would otherwise remain empty. I always make sure to rotate the clothes stored there so that I can make the most of my wardrobe throughout the year.
However, I am always mindful of what is under the seats. Don’t store anything in areas where it may get hot, such as near heating vents. Take care that items are not stored near switches. It’s crucial to ensure that the storage is safe and won’t damage any of my belongings or interfere with the functionality of the caravan.
I use the narrow gaps between furniture to slide in flat, foldable storage bags. Caravan storage spaces are often overlooked and can be a perfect solution for storing items like extra blankets or sports equipment. By utilizing these areas, I have managed to keep my living space tidy, making it more inviting and functional.
Furthermore, I make it a point to regularly check these hidden storage spots to ensure they aren’t becoming cluttered. The other advantage of regular checks is to keep track of what I have in the van. This proactive approach to storage not only helps maintain organization but also creates a more efficient living environment.
Hanging Shoe Racks
Hanging shoe racks are an absolute lifesaver in my caravan. I hang one on the inside of the wardrobe door and use it to store lightweight items like toiletries, cleaning supplies, and even rolled-up socks. It keeps everything off the surfaces and out of sight—a win for someone like me who doesn’t like clutter over the walls.
For me, fabric shoe racks work best because they’re lightweight and easy to fold away when not in use. Plus, they’re soft, which means I don’t have to worry about them banging around while I’m on the move.
Use Stackable Storage Tubs (or Maybe Not)
I’m not a huge fan of stackable storage tubs because I find they can reduce the amount of usable space. That said, I know they’re a popular option for many people due to their durability and structured organization. However, I believe that for maximizing storage efficiency, especially in tight or awkward spaces, soft storage bags are far superior.
For instance, I use soft, collapsible storage bags under the bed to store extra bedding and clothes. I find these bags are not only flexible but can easily adapt to the shapes of the spaces, unlike rigid tubs these bags mold to fit more effectively. This flexibility makes them incredibly practical for my needs, as I can optimize every inch of storage.
Moreover, I prefer using clear plastic bags for my storage because they provide the advantage of visibility. With a quick glance, I can see exactly what’s inside without having to dig through or open multiple containers. This transparency saves me time and helps me keep my space organized. In addition to under-bed storage, I also utilize these bags in closets and on shelves, where they blend in seamlessly and maintain a tidy look.
The use of vacuum bags for storing winter clothes and blankets is ideal too because it reduces space. The downside of using these space saving strategies is that you may be tempted to fill the space with unnecessary items. This could cause caravan weight issues.
Overall, while stackable storage tubs have their merits, my preference leans towards soft storage bags for their versatility and efficiency in maximizing space.
Use of an Annex or Awning
If you have an annex or awning, it’s a fantastic way to extend your living and storage space. I don’t have an annex, however, it can be incredibly beneficial as it provides a dedicated area to store larger items.
This extra space not only keeps your main living area decluttered but also allows you to easily access items you need for outdoor gatherings.
To keep things organized in your annex, using plastic tubs would be a good idea. You can label each tub to make locating items a breeze. Consider using different colors or sizes for different categories of items, such as game equipment, picnic supplies, or seasonal décor.
Another important consideration when storing items in the annex is the weather. Proper ventilation is key to ensuring your gear does not get wet as this could lead to mould or mildew. Inspect the area regularly for any signs of moisture and ensure your stored items are covered or stored to remain dry.
Additionally, you might want to invest in a waterproof tarp or cover for larger equipment and furniture pieces. This simple step can make a significant difference in prolonging the life of your belongings.
Avoid Over-Packing
As a minimalist, I’m very conscious of not over-packing. I’ve learned to stick to essentials and choose versatile items that can serve multiple purposes. For example, instead of bringing separate clothes for lounging and hiking, I pack lightweight, moisture-wicking outfits that work for both.
It is a good idea to check your cupboards frequently, regular inspection can reveal forgotten items and unused supplies. These neglected products may include long-expired spices and canned goods. Also check your kitchen gadgets it is surprising how these can duplicated quickly.
Make sure you are utilizing the space efficiently in the tunnel boot and the toolbox, to avoid clutter and confusion in your workspace. Additionally, don’t duplicate items unnecessarily, as this can lead to waste and can hinder your overall productivity.
It’s important to maintain organization, take the time to assess what tools and supplies you really need.
For me, keeping my caravan organized and caravan storage optimised is all about balancing functionality with minimalism. Using soft storage options and avoiding rigid containers I have created a caravan setup that works perfectly for my needs.
