Boost Your Brainpower

Do you have days when you are feeling a little foggy in the head?  Science is always finding new ways to help.

With a few simple strategies you can improve your brain health and help you stay sharper for longer.

The brain is a complex organ that basically controls the functions of your body. Your brain needs special nutrients to function to its maximum: glucose, vitamins, minerals and other essential chemicals. For example, the fuel (energy) for your brain is glucose. You can get glucose by eating carbohydrates or other foods that can be converted to glucose.

Science is advancing all the time and learning more about the brain, how it functions and ways we can improve its functioning.  This enables up to perform at our maximum level.  You help this by being aware of a few strategies that will assist with improving your brain power.

A Well Balanced Diet

Raichle and Gusnard’s research has found your brain burns around 1250K joules (300 calories) each day simply by performing its regular mental tasks so it’s important to keep it fuelled up with the right kind of foods. The brain also uses approximately 20% of the oxygen we need to survive.

A well-balanced diet improves overall health as well as brain health. Eating the right food reduces the risk of developing health conditions that can lead to dementia.

Foods that promote brain health include:

  • olive oil
  • fruits and vegetables high in vitamin E, such as blueberries, broccoli, and spinach
  • foods rich in antioxidants, such as walnuts and pecans
  • omega-3 fatty acids that can be found in fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and albacore tuna

Chocolate (Cocoa) and Coconut

A study by The Age Well Project /has found that eating chocolate (made with cocoa) and coconut may protect brain function and counteract cognitive decline. The process is that it assists with widening the blood vessels in the brain thus improving blood flow.  It also may improve general cognition, attention, processing, speed and memory.

The chocolate must be made with cocoa which is also a good source of flavonoids (dietary antioxidants).

In the process of their research The Age Well project focused on the brains of young teens who are sitting for exams.  They have published a recipe for Brain Balls for these exam sitting teens.  It looks like a good recipe to have for after the gym or even as an afternoon pick me up, when we need the brain power even for us older adults.

COCONUT CHOCOLATE BRAIN BALLS

Ingredients
  

  • 75g coconut oil
  • 60g almond butter
  • 50g coconut flakes
  • 2 tabs gogi berries or cranberries
  • 80g oats add more if necessary
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 50g dark or milk chocolate (made with cocoa)

Instructions
 

  • Gently warm the coconut oil and almond butter together in a medium sized bowl in the microwave.
    Stir in the rest of the ingredients, except the chocolate. Put the bowl in the fridge for around 20mins, until the mixture is firm.
    With wet hands, shape walnut-sized balls of the mixture – it’s very crumbly.
    Melt the chocolate and pour about half a teaspoon over each brain ball. Keep in the fridge.

Learn a Second Language

Learning a new language is not only fun it’s also great for your brain power.  In 2021 a study followed a group of adults aged 65 and older who hadn’t studied another language in a previous decade.  They were encouraged to complete a Spanish course using a language app dual lingo. 

After using the app for just 30 minutes each day for 16 weeks they showed improvements in range of cognitive functions. It was also evident that they enjoyed learning a new skill.

Elevate Your Heart Rate

A quick way to improve your concentration is aerobic exercise.  A single 10 minute bout of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise is enough to improve focus and productivity.    Remember the brain uses 20% of the oxygen we breath.

The next time you’re battling brain fog skip the caffeine and try a quick workout instead.  If you are one who suffers the afternoon slump, a quick walk at lunch time or afternoon teatime might help your focus and energy levels.

Interval Training

Keeping active doesn’t only reap rewards for younger brains it’s also useful for older adults.

An Australian study, conducted at the university of Sunshine Coast in Queensland found that interval training can be as beneficial for the brains of older men as continuous exercise.  Interval Training is alternating short bursts of more intense activity with longer bursts at a lower intensity level.

If you have health concerns or haven’t exercised in awhile always consult your GP before starting a new programme.

Household Chores

That’s right!  Scientists are already aware of the positive impact that exercise of all levels has on the brain. These studies are conducted to understand how different forms of physical activity contribute to brain health.  This is crucial for developing strategies to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults.

In a recent study 66 cognitively healthy adults were asked about the time they spent on household chores, such as tidying, dusting, meal preparation and clean up, shopping, heavy housework, yard work, home repairs and caregiving.

The researchers found that older adults who spent more time engaging in such activities had greater brain volume, regardless of how much exercise they did. 

The evidence is reasonably convincing that the way to improve our brain power is to keep moving, no matter what exercise we do or to what level.  The scientists were also suggesting that the actual planning of the household chores had an impact on improving brain functioning.

Sleep

Seep is our bodies way of recharging.  It’s also essential for building and regenerating at a cellular level. Sleep consolidates memories and removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake. 

While scientists are still learning exactly how sleep impacts brain development it’s becoming clear that it’s essential for a variety of cognitive functions.

This is evident if you’ve struggled to think clearly after a night spent tossing and turning.

Improving your brain power is about adopting healthy habits and making healthy lifestyle choices.

Buttered Broccoli and Baby Carrrots

This tasty dish is rich in healthy fat and fiber. Packed with all the goodness found in broccoli and baby carrot. You will be full for hours after you eat it.

Ingredients
  

2 – 3 tablespoons butter

1 clove of garlic (sliced)

400 grams broccoli florets

300grams baby carrots

1 thin slice of ginger

Dried chilli flakes and pepper

    Instructions
     

    • Heat pan until hot and add in butter. Add ginger and garlic and fry on medium heat until fragrant.
      Toss in the broccoli florets and stir fry it in the butter for 1 to 2 minutes.
      Partly boil carrots, drain and toss in with the broccoli.
      Add salt to taste and sprinkle pepper and chilli flakes according to your preference.
      Ready to serve.

    Tofu and Bean Sprouts

    This is an easy to prepare dish that only takes minutes to prepare. The key point to note is that you should not overcook the bean sprouts. You want them nice and crunchy.

    Ingredients:

    • 150 grams bean sprouts
    • 1 red bell pepper sliced
    • 1 slice garlic
    • 1 small chopped onion
    • 1 block of tofu cut into smaller cubes
    • Ω tsp of turmeric
    • Ω tsp of chilli powder
    • Soya sauce
    • 1 – 2 tablepoons of vegetable oil

    Directions:

    Heat oil in pan until hot. Add in onions and tofu and stir fry for 2 to 3 minutes. Add in garlic, turmeric and chilli powder and stir fry for 1 minute.
    Add bell pepper into pan and stir fry for 1 minute. Add 1 to 2 tbsp of soya sauce to wok, followed by the bean sprouts.
    Toss the mix around in the pan on high heat so that the bean sprouts get coated with all the flavor in the oil and sauce. Fry sprouts on high heat and remove from heat.
    (Bean sprouts should be removed from pan while they still look white and crunchy. This will prevent overcooking which makes them limp.)
    Place sprouts in bowl and allow to cool. Ready to serve.

    Crunchy Celery Salad

    Celery can have a strong smell and some people love it, while other hate it. If you love it, this recipe will make for a yummy dish – and celery is vitamin K, potassium, vitamin C, etc. So, it ís healthy too.

    Ingredients:

    • 4 celery stalks (finely chopped)
    • 1 red apples (chopped into small cubes)
    • 1 green apple (chopped into small Cubes)
    • 2 red bell peppers (cored, seeded and chopped into slices)
    • 1 yellow bell pepper (cored, seeded and chopped into slices)
    • Raisins (if you like them)
    • 100 grams walnuts
    • Few sprigs of parsley
    • Extra virgin olive oil

    Directions:

    Wash the celery, apples and peppers well before preparing.
    Add all ingredients in a big salad bowl.

    Sprinkle with Walnuts

    Drizzle the salad with extra virgin olive oil. Toss the salad and it ís ready to serve.

    Self Help Strategies

    Needing to implement self help ideas into your live infers that you may be unwell, struggling with life challenges or not functioning to your full capacity.  We are constantly teaching our children self help strategies to encourage their independence and to equip them with the skills they need to function as adults. We often forget that, even as adults there are times in our lives we need to do a check on our own well being and apply some Self Help strategies.

    Being a parent, friend, professional or whatever responsibilities you have can cause you to have times when you may feel less able to cope. 

    In these situations, it is a good idea to have self-help strategies to focus on to enable you to maintain a maximum level of functioning.

    Why Self Help

    Helping yourself is a great way to maintain optimum wellness and health.  In our day to day lives we can struggle with challenges the cause stress.  If we don’t address the effect these challenges have on us we can, without being aware of it get into a situation where we are not coping and we become angry, frustrated, irritable or even physically or mentally unwell.

    A way to explain this would be above and below the line thinking. The diagram below illustrated what this is and the effect above and below the line thinking can have on our day to day functioning.

    The line signifies a choice between how you thoughtfully respond to a situation or automatically react. Stress can have an instant effect on where you are “operating”. If unchecked you could be below the line for the majority of time and not even realise it.

    1. Operating above the line is open and positive. It’s about ownership, accountability and responsibility.
    2. Operating below the line is closed and negative. It’s about denial, excuses, defensiveness and blame.

    What are Self Help Strategies

    Self Help and Self Care Strategies seem to be interchangeable.  The important thing is to recognise you are starting to have challenges and do something about it.

    Unf*ck Yourself is the handbook for the resigned and defeated,
    a manifesto for real-life change and unleashing your true potential.

    For some people it is listening to music, going for walks or watching movies, others maybe seeking help from friends or family.

    It’s very easy to find information you don’t already know. It’s much more challenging to apply it successfully to your life. Change is scary to most people, implementing changes and improving your lifestyle is very rewarding.

    Suggestions for Self Help Strategies

    Take Action

    Ask yourself how you can apply the information to your life. Many self-help materials are very theoretical. They have great ideas, but it’s not always clear on how to apply them to your life. As you are reading, listening, or thinking, ask yourself how you can use the information to enhance your life.

    Create poster and have it on the fridge, it could be your signs of overwhelm or what to do when you notice you are feeling a particular emotion, fearful, angry, lonely. Create a poster as illustrated.

    Create a Routine

    Develop a self-help routine just like you would a workout routine. Make applying the information you learn a regular occurrence.

    Start slowly and you will build habits that get you results. You may require professional help to get yo started.

    Most of us know how to solve the majority of our most pressing issues. We just can’t figure out how to get ourselves to take action consistently.

    New habits are a challenge to establish. Taking 2 steps forward and one step back is not unusual, the important thing is to start and from this you will gain experience and realise that there are other options than running the treadmill you are currently on.

    In the end, success is about using your time wisely each day. You can’t help but get great results if you perform effective actions over and over.

    Basically Self Help is the first step in taking control of your life and recognising when and if you need to implement minor or major changes to live to your full potential.

    Gym Clothes-Choosing the Best for You

    Check your gym clothes to see if they are right for you. If you start your workout and your shorts are riding up, your boobs aren’t well supported or if your shirt gets really heavy from sweat then you probably have chosen your gear incorrectly.

    Different workouts call for different clothes so think carefully before you put your outfit together. If your clothes are making you uncomfortable or self conscious then you are more likely to quit your program.

    Wear gym clothes that are comfortable, but if you are running or biking, avoid wide-leg or loose pants that could get tangled up in the pedals or your feet. For activities such as yoga or Pilates, stretchy, fitted fabrics that wick away sweat are a good choice.

    Tips for Choosing your Gear

    Activity Appropriate

    Some forms of exercise will be more enjoyable if you use activity appropriate clothing.

    For example, cycling shorts are padded and can make long bike rides and an indoor cycling class much more comfortable. These items aren’t necessarily the best choice of clothing for running or group exercise classes where you need unpadded bike shorts or gym shorts. Running shorts are equally unsuitable for cycling as they have no padding and are prone to bunching and chafing.

    Wearing appropriate undergarments is important to ensure you aren’t distracted with wide leg shorts (guys) and sports bras that do not fit and support sufficiently (ladies).

    Stick with clothing that is designed specifically for the activity you want to do and you will be much more comfortable.

    Supportive Sports Bra

    It’s recommended women wear a supportive bra while exercising, not only for comfort and support, but because it reduces any chance of injury.

    When you are shopping for a sports bra, remember these rules — it should fit slightly tighter than a regular bra, but not so tight that you can’t breathe comfortably. Make sure there is no chafing around the armholes, shoulder straps or seams; if it has hooks or snaps, make sure those don’t chafe, either. The straps shouldn’t dig into your shoulders and the cup fabric should be smooth.

    To ensure you buy the right size, raise your hands over your head. If the elastic band rides up your rib cage, you need a smaller band or the straps need to be adjusted.

    Avoid Cotton Clothes use Wicking Materials

    Wicking is the ability of a material to divert sweat away from your skin and through the material for easy evaporation. This helps to keep your skin dry and comfortable.

    Choose clothes – shorts, underwear, inners and T-shirts – made of dry-fit or moisture wicking material that will keep you dry instead.

    Cotton and other natural fibers are not naturally good wickers. Cotton clothing absorbs moisture, be it sweat or rain, like a sponge. Once wet, cotton becomes heavy and cold, loses its shape and clings to your body. This means the cold, wet fabric is next to your body, cooling it down and chafing the skin. When the muscles cool down, they can also start to cramp.

    Most gym gear is now either a cotton blend, synthetic, environmentally friendly and antimicrobial. These fabrics are really nice on you skin and reduce or eliminate chafing and sweat rashes.

    These fabrics are a good choice if you run, cycle, hike, or do any type of workout where you are going to sweat excessively.

    Cost of Gym Gear

    Gym gear can be really expensive. This is usually the big brands like nike, adidas, lulu lemon, lorna jane and under armour (to name a few). If you compare the labels on the items you will usually find that it is the quality of the material used. Some of the fabric is beautiful to wear it keeps you warm or cool moves with your body and wicks the moisture from your skin.

    If you are on a budget you might find that the department stores have reasonable quality gym gear and seem to be improving all the time. I have items from the department stores and they wear well and if your workout is short you can get away with wearing these items without being over heated or cold.

    It is a good idea though to purchase a good quality sports bra because this is where you need your support and if you care for the fabric it will last.

    Read the care labels and wash after your workout then the sweat won’t breakdown the fabric and they will last longer.

    Also mix and match your pieces to increase the number of outfits you have.

    Footwear

    To stay comfortable while running outdoors or on the treadmill, it’s important to buy shoes are the correct fit for your foot. There are several sports stores that will conduct an assessment on your foot and also assess your gait and recommend shoes that will give you the most support and comfort.

    There are different shoes for running and also gym, if you are running long distance you may need separate running shoes because these are lighter and have more technology in the sole. Gym shoes have more support around your foot and can be a slightly heavier shoe.

    Choose running shoes that are a snug fit but not tight; remember your feet can swell and lengthen over a run, so make sure there’s a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe (which isn’t always the big toe) and the end of a shoe.

    Compression Wear

    Sports compression is designed to provide external compression to the body, often increasing in pressure towards the extremity of the limb – this is known as graduated compression. Compression technology can be applied to a range of garments such as socks, shorts, tights, arm sleeves, tops and more. The level of compression power in a garment is dependent on factors such as fabric structure, material and size, as well as the individual’s shape and size.

    Some workout clothing is specially designed to give you support during your workouts, for example long sox are good for extra support for running.

    There is no evidence to suggest one age group would benefit from compression more than another. Given that research shows compression can improve joint awareness and reduce muscle oscillation, it’s possible that older people can benefit from wearing compression in their daily lives but there’s no current research to explicitly suggest this is the case.

    Wearing the correct clothing for your workout is important, however don’t allow it to be a barrier for exercise. There was a time when all that was available were cotton t shirts and shorts, plus running shoes without all the technology there is today. The golden rule is whatever works for you. You may start with buying the sports shoes and then gradually increase your sports clothing as your interest in exercise and your budget will accommodate.
